FAQs

What sort of disruption will it cause to motorists, residents and businesses? There will be some disruption to motorists as some of the works will take place in the highway. We will keep everyone updated on when that will happen via our website. Residents and businesses in proximity to where the work is taking place may also suffer some disruption. However we will do our utmost to ensure the disruption is kept to a minimum and that you are kept informed as the work progresses.

There are families in that area whose homes have been flooded with sewage on several occasions – why is this money not being spent on them? We sympathise with people who are affected by sewer flooding – it is an awful experience. However, these are two very separate issues. We have to carry out work on improving the quality of water in the River Ribble to meet new environmental quality regulations set by the European Union. United Utilities are looking at other projects to resolve particular areas of flooding.

What will the level of noise be and how will you minimise this? On completion of works there will be little or no noise from the installed plant and equipment in the Preston city area as the tunnels will be over 30m deep underground. During construction we have noise legislation to work to and will endeavour to keep within the stipulated limits during our working hours.

I live near the proposed site of a pressure balancing system, will there be a smell problem? No, because the contents of the tunnel will not be in the system long enough to generate smells.

How will you keep people informed? We have proposals in place to release information leaflets to the local area residents and businesses at key points during the project and this dedicated website will contain up to date detail and information relating to the project and its effects on the surrounding areas. A number of public exhibitions are due to be held and locations and dates will be published in advance.
