Improving the sewer network in Blackburn

Our commitment to improve water quality and clean up the River Blakewater, the River Darwen and the Leeds-Liverpool Canel stems from a recent study undertaken by United Utilities.  This identified 18 Unsatisfactory Intermittent Discharges (UIDs) from the existing drainage network across Blackburn which are causing water quality deficiencies in the town's watercourses.

As a result we are now undertaking a substantial programme of construction and remedial work throughout the Blackburn catchment in order to deal with the problems referred to above. Several of the Blackburn schemes have now been designed and construction work started back in May 2011 on our first phase of work. Other schemes are currently in the very early stages of design and will be developed into detailed proposals, with construction work due to start over the next few months.

This work will impact upon the whole of the Blackburn area.  With a residential population over 100,000, and a further 18,000 living in outlying areas we will be working closely with Blackburn with Darwen Council and Capita to keep disruption to a minimum.

The projects are split into four geographical areas, and you can find out more about what is going on in each area by clicking on the links below.
